Associate Artists
Eleanor Boes is a writer/actor from the US, based in London. At the age of 13, her first ever screenplay was longlisted in the Beverly Hills Film Festival’s screenplay competition. Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s Teen Council programmes were an influential part of her theatrical coming of age. She has had work at Edinburgh Fringe, the Cockpit and White Bear Theatre and her prose work have
been featured with Eaten Magazine and Period Zine. In 2024, she was selected for and participated in the Cuttyhunk Writers’ Residency. She is a graduate of The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Inside and outside of her work with Small Fish Theatre, she tends to gravitate towards themes of femininity, decay and power. She also likes to cook, read, climb and explore.
ABOUT SMALL FISH THEATRE
Freya Griffiths is a theatre director from North Manchester, based in London.
She has spent the last year as the Resident Assistant Director at the Orange Tree Theatre, and trained on the Birkbeck MFA in Theatre Directing.
Freya’s background is in movement directing, so physical story-telling is at the centre of her rehearsal rooms. She has made work at The Orange Tree Theatre, The Chelsea Theatre, Liverpool Everyman Playhouse, The White Bear Theatre, LIPA, ArtsEd and more. She has read and developed new plays for fringe, as well as large scale venues, and provides movement and intimacy support to multiple productions. She has assisted Richard Eyre, Tom Littler, and Caroline Steinbeiss in their adaptations of classic plays, which she loves (<3) .
And when she's not directing, Freya is usually reading, painting or out in nature, which she also loves.

2024
We Weren’t Innocent; We Were Girls has a one-week run at White Bear Theatre in London. It receives 4-5* reviews and is nominated for the Homotopia Prize and two London Pub Theatres awards.

2023
First reading of the company’s next project, We Weren’t Innocent; We Were Girls. Eleanor and Freya graduate from Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts’ BA Acting programme.
2022
Small Fish Theatre is founded as Lucid Blue Stories to bring Eleanor’s play Into the Deep to Edinburgh Fringe, directed by Freya. Despite no one on the team having previous producing experience, the project breaks even in one of the most competitive theatre environments in the world. It also receives phenomenal audience feedback.

What We're Working On
Confinement
Western edge of the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1688: 17 year-old Sarah goes into labour with her first child. Her aunt, a prominent village figure, calls on women of the community to help Sarah through the most dangerous period of her life so far.
Over 24 hours an unlikely assortment of friends and acquaintances do everything they can to deliver the child safely. Questions about the womens’ fate, duty and choices arise in this rare solely female space. When Sarah reveals a shocking secret, division threatens to jeopardise everything they know, and a new threat looms closer than ever.
We are currently planning a public R&D performance of Confinement for this autumn. Stay tuned for further details!
The Masochists
Ivy is trying to start her adult life when the most interesting person she’s ever met reappears. The two young women travel down a path that was never there for them before, with no idea what lies at the end of it.
We are in the process of acquiring funding for a fully realised production of The Masochists at a Liverpool venue and a London venue for early 2027. Keep staying tuned!
Workshop! (Even more)
We hope to do more workshops of new and rediscovered plays in 2026 an beyond. Developing and making is one of our favourite stages of a proccess and we'd like to spend more time there.

We want to use what we learn in workshop processes to continue to bring gutsy, soulful theatre to new audiences. We believe in theatre as a catalyst for change and self-discovery. In the next few years, we want to keep performing all over the UK and would also love to give performing in Europe a go.
